Sorry I haven't answered this sooner, The Tech Inspection and Contingency Row will be held in downtown Las Vegas as we used to do it, on Fremont Blvd in front of the El Cortez Hotel, a couple of blocks down from the covered mall section called "The Fremont Experience". Hundreds of racecars, Thousands of race people and spectator types, along with a good measure of spectacular women, all together on the city streets of Las Vegas. The race will take place in the desert southwest of town towards the state line with the Start/Finish at Jean Nevada, where I attended my 1st off road race in 1973. www.themint400.com/

Hey guys! I know I haven't posted much lately, I've been a very busy boy. In amongst trying to make a living, over the last 4 weeks, I've worked Tech Inspection at 3 off road races with 3 different race organizer groups. There was a MORE race at Barstow, then the Mint 400 last week, and now the MDR Mojave 250 yesterday. At the Mint 400, I took very few pictures and haven't downloaded them yet. My wife took some Mint pics with a film camera and got them developed last nite while Warren and I were finishing up at Barstow. I just got to glance at them a little while ago. I can link you to some photos taken by a reporter for CBS TV Las Vegas affiliate Channel 8s website. Warren and I are in there doing Tech, and there are a bunch of pics of race cars in Tech and Contingency, as well as some race pics. photos.lasvegasnow.com/thumbnails.php?album=108Picture 1, the blonde at the right leaning on the TT bumper is from my home town here...Courtney runs the local auto parts store with her mom, models, is hotter than the chubby girl with the sash, and her boyfriend codrives with Sportscaster Cameron Steele in his UnboundEnergy/Yokohama TT. Picture 14 is truck #1401. The owner/driver was VERRRY unhappy with me. I found that the joints in the top of the roll cage were NOT welded all the way around and rejected it. He would have to cut the roof off or open and weld the joints all the way around or not race. He complained to the race director, but Steve stood behind me and told him if the Tech crew said it must be, then it must be! Early next morning, I was asked to re-check the truck by a now pleasant fellow who had cut holes in the roof of the truck and welded the joints! Pic 30 is of my son Warren inspecting the Weyrich's Class 1 car. In addition to working 2 long days of Tech, more Tech duties race day morning from 5:45AM until the last car was off the line, and from before the 1st finisher until after the last car finished after midnite, The Tech Director Art Savedra had 1 of his 5-1600 cars racing, with his son and 2 Tech workers in the car. I was in the car in a race last year myself. So we wound up helping out with that as well. Here is a link to DB's photo of the 559 car on the 1st lap: The car ran out of gas on the 2nd lap at mile marker 85. So Art and I got a "Retrieval Pass" from the race director and took some gas out to Check 19 to meet with the race car towed 4 miles along the course by one of the official "retrievers". Time lost - about 1 hour even. As the racers finished, the Tech crew was there to pull the cars into the post-race Impounds for inspection and teardowns. I even had to interrupt the Speed Channel interviewers to get some of the cars into impounds. Unlimited cars like TTs and Class 1s are not inspected after the race, but all of the restricted classes are subject to it. Limited displacement cars such as 10s and 12s get a displacement check. All of the 1600 VW powered cars got a displacement check and then torn down to the point where the crank and rods could be inspected. The Tech Director's Baja finished 3rd in class, so it was subject to teardown as well. Art could not in good ethics, tear his own car down and inspect it, so he asked the guy who won the class to tear it down for him and participate in the inspection. Since the guy also preps Art's Bug and was going to be pulling the motor out of the car on Tuesday to send it to the engine builder anyway... One of the competitors in 5-16 Baja Bugs (#557) was a guy who lives up the mountain above where I live and raced in the 69 Mint 400 and Baja 1000. His car, which he raced in the last Baja 1000, is street registered, has full window glass including windwings, working wipers and turn indicators and full VW suspension arms, spindles and a primary driver in his 70s, finished the Mint 400! He says he is going to re-retire the car after this to play use and invited me to meet up for some off road play in the desert and mountains near here.
